There's something about the holiday season that makes me nostalgic.
Maybe it's the music playing in the background. Maybe it's the familiar decorations coming out of storage. Maybe it's gathering with friends, getting in the car for a holiday road trip, or simply settling onto the sofa with a cozy quilt.
The holidays have a way of making us remember.
And that feeling was part of the inspiration behind my newest quilt pattern: Winter Drive.

Winter Drive is a modern holiday quilt pattern designed for quilters who love seasonal projects but want something a little different from a traditional Christmas quilt.
And I think that's what makes this quilt so much fun.

A Modern Holiday Sampler Quilt You Can Make Your Own
Winter Drive began as a commissioned project for the 2025 Phoenix Area Independent Quilt Shop Hop. The goal was to create a holiday-inspired quilt that many different kinds of makers would enjoy.
So instead of designing a quilt that had to look one particular way, I wanted to create something versatile, something you could make your own.
Winter Drive includes nine different blocks inspired by the feeling of winter and the holidays. You'll find nature-inspired elements like trees and stars, along with little hints of Christmas, including a gift and ornaments. But the quilt doesn't scream traditional Christmas, and that's intentional.
If you're looking for a modern Christmas quilt that feels festive without relying on the traditional red-and-green Christmas aesthetic, Winter Drive gives you plenty of room to experiment.
Depending on the fabrics you choose, Winter Drive can tell a completely different story.
You can use traditional reds and greens if that's your style. Or you can move toward winter-inspired neutrals. You could use modern prints, colorful solids, low-volume fabrics, Christmas fabrics, or even fabrics that don't feel particularly seasonal at all.

Why Winter Drive Makes a Great Holiday Sampler Quilt
One of the things I love about sampler quilts is that they give you permission to slow down.
Instead of sewing the same block over and over again, you get to experience a little variety.
Some Winter Drive blocks come together quickly. Others give you a little more time to settle into the process. And along the way, you may even have an opportunity to learn or practice a new skill.
That makes this a great longer-term project. You don't have to sit down and make an entire quilt in a weekend. Instead, imagine setting aside a little sewing time each week.
Make one block. Put it on the design wall. Admire your progress. Then come back and make another.
There's something incredibly satisfying about watching all those individual pieces slowly become a quilt.
And during a season that can sometimes feel like it's moving much too quickly, I love the idea of having a project that encourages you to pause.
Choose Your Own Colors and Fabrics
If you're searching for Christmas quilt ideas, don't feel limited to traditional holiday fabrics. Winter Drive can be made with Christmas prints, modern quilting cottons, solids, low-volume fabrics, or colors completely outside the usual holiday palette.
The flexibility doesn't stop with fabric. Because Winter Drive is a sampler, you can play with the final arrangement of your blocks, too.
- Want to make the quilt exactly as shown? You can.
- Want to change the placement? Go for it.
- Love one particular block? Make it again.
- Want to skip a block? That's okay, too.
You can even take one of the blocks and turn it into a coordinating pillow.
I want Winter Drive to feel less like a set of rules and more like an invitation to play.
After all, one of my favorite things about quilting is that two people can start with the exact same pattern and end up with quilts that look completely different. That's the magic of fabric, color, and creativity.
Why I Love Making Seasonal Quilts
The holidays are supposed to be joyful, but they can also be busy. Like, sometimes too busy.
There are gifts to make or buy, meals to plan, events to attend, decorations to put up, and approximately one million other things that seem to find their way onto the holiday to-do list.
Winter Drive isn't meant to add another obligation. I hope it does the opposite. I hope it gives you a reason to take some time for yourself.
Put on your favorite holiday music, show or audiobook. Make a cup of coffee or tea, and sit down at your sewing machine, and make something simply because you want to.
