Tutorial: Make beautiful scrappy, fabric covered ornaments
'Tis the season to get crafty and add a touch of magic to your holiday decor! In this DIY fabric covered ornaments guide, you’ll learn how to turn plain ornaments into stunning pieces of art. This blog post will walk you through the process of transforming ordinary ornaments into extraordinary creations. Let's dive in and start crafting some holiday magic!
Gather Your Supplies
To begin creating your fabric covered ornaments, start by gathering your supplies. You will need plain ornaments, various fabric scraps, a pair of scissors, Mod Podge or fabric glue, a paintbrush, and any additional embellishments you want to incorporate in your designs.
Rather than fabric scraps, I decided to use a couple mini charm packs I had laying around. I cut the 2 1/2’ squares into four pieces. I also used plastic ornaments, but glass ones will also work! Once you have all your materials assembled, you can move on to choosing the perfect fabrics to bring your creative vision to life.,
Choose Your Fabrics
When choosing your fabrics for your DIY fabric covered ornaments, consider the color scheme or theme you want to achieve. Opt for a mix of patterns and textures to add visual interest to your ornaments. Keep in mind the size of the ornaments and select fabrics that will wrap around them easily without too much excess material.
This is a great project to make with little ones and also to use up your scraps! You can go super scrappy or follow a specific color theme! For mine, I used holiday-themed mini charm packs so I knew the fabrics would coordinate.
Covering the Ornaments
Alright, let’s get down to it! To cover the ornaments, start by cutting your selected fabrics into small pieces. Prep your ornaments by removing the stopper. Next, starting at the top of the ornament, apply a thin layer of fabric glue or Mod Podge to the surface of the ornament. Then carefully place the fabric onto the ornament and cover with another thin layer of fabric glue or Mod Podge - smoothing out any wrinkles or bubbles as you go.
Continue these steps, overlapping fabric pieces as you go. Once the entire surface of the ornament is covered, carefully lay your ornament to dry, balancing it on the top so that no glue is sitting on a surface.
Let your ornament sit overnight to dry, then place the stopper back in the top. Use yarn or twin to create a loop to hang your ornament on a tree.
With the right supplies and fabrics, you can easily transform plain ornaments into stunning pieces of art. Let your creativity shine and add a touch of magic to your holiday decor this season. Not only are these ornaments easy and quick to make, they make wonderful handmade gifts!
I just had a thought. It might be a good idea to put the upside down in a egg holder to dry that way you can put them to the side to dry. I know I have all kinds of fluff (dog hair) flying around that might stick to them. Yuk! I’m just thinking about my situation haha. Thanks for this tutorial ❤️
