Orangewood Quilt: The Peach Fuzz One
Orangewood Quilt: The Peach Fuzz One
Hey there, fellow quilter and fabric enthusiast! I'm so excited to share one of my latest creations with you – the 2024 Pantone Color of the Year - Peach Fuzz - Orangewood Quilt. This project has been an absolute delight to work on, and I can't wait to tell you all about it. So, grab your favorite cozy drink, settle in, and let’s dive into the story of this vibrant quilt together!
Let’s start with the inspiration behind this quilt. When Pantone announced Peach Fuzz as the Color of the Year, I knew I wanted to create a quilt that would really let this beautiful shade stand out. I decided to use my Orangewood Quilt Pattern for this project. Released back in late 2019 – you know, before the pandemic – this pattern has a special place in my heart. It features a simple, bold design with plenty of negative space, making it the perfect canvas to showcase a single, stunning color.

Working on a Color of the Year quilt is always an exciting challenge for me. I generally use a lot of colors and prints in my work, so focusing on a single color takes me out of my comfort zone in the best possible way. For this quilt, I decided on a simple ombre color palette with a bright white background fabric. The result is a fresh, modern look that really lets the peachy tones shine.
Now, let’s talk fabrics. When it came to choosing the perfect peachy hues, I turned to my trusty Kona Cottons. I selected a range of colors that captured all the lovely peachy, orangey tones I was aiming for. These fabrics are a dream to work with, and their vibrant colors bring so much life to the quilt.
My Kona Cotton palette for this quilt:
- Dusty Peach
- Creamsicle
- Peach
- Mango
- Nectarine
- Carrot
- Background - Snow
The Orangewood Quilt pattern relies heavily on half square triangles, which are one of my favorite piecing techniques. They come together pretty quickly and create such a striking effect. However, I have to admit, I tend to get stuck trimming them – it’s a bit of a love-hate relationship! I’m really not a fan of trimming, but I know that its a necessary step that will make piecing easier and help those points line up. But once you get past that stage, the rest of the quilt comes together like a breeze. For an added touch of coziness, I decided to back this quilt with flannel, making it extra snuggly and perfect for those chilly evenings.
This quilt has been a few months in the making. I worked on it off and on, fitting in sewing sessions whenever I could find the time. There’s something so satisfying about seeing a project slowly come together, stitch by stitch.
Speaking of which, if you’re a beginner looking for a fun and accessible project, the Orangewood Quilt is a fantastic choice. The piecing instructions are straightforward, and the pattern itself is easy to follow. Don’t be intimidated by the half square triangles – they’re a great way to practice and improve your skills. Plus, the end result is so rewarding!
While there aren’t any particularly special features or intricate details in this quilt, the overall effect is stunning. The subtle ombre of peachy hues against the crisp white background creates a vibrant, cheerful look that’s perfect for brightening up any space. And with its cozy flannel backing, this quilt is destined to become a favorite during the cooler winter months.
As for the future of this quilt, I have no doubt it will add a lovely pop of color to my living room rotation. I can already imagine snuggling up with it on a cold winter night, a cup of hot cocoa in hand, and feeling the warmth and satisfaction of a project well done.
So, are you feeling inspired to make your own Orangewood Quilt? I hope so! This pattern is a wonderful canvas for experimenting with colors and creating something truly unique. Whether you choose to follow the Peach Fuzz theme or go in a completely different direction, I can’t wait to see what you create!
