Introducing the Tatum Quilt Pattern: A Playful Journey with Scrappy Flying Geese

I am so excited to introduce the Tatum Quilt, a pattern that has been in the making for years, though I didn’t know it at the time! It all started back in 2022 when I was working on a year-long scrappy quilt project. I had this idea to use the scraps from each quilt I made that year to create a block that represented it. One of those blocks sparked something special, and I knew I wanted to design an entire quilt around that idea. Fast forward to now, and the Tatum Quilt is ready to take you on your own creative journey.

The Design Story: Why Flying Geese?

I’ve always been drawn to flying geese quilts, though I can’t quite pinpoint why. There’s something about the movement and the way the pieces come together that just feels so satisfying. The Tatum Quilt takes this classic quilt block and gives it a fresh, scrappy twist. The flying geese are arranged in a way that creates movement across the quilt, and when you add in bold sashing, the design really pops!

Speaking of that sashing—it’s one of my favorite parts of this pattern. Usually, sashing acts as a background element, but with the Tatum Quilt, it becomes a key design feature. If you’re someone who loves playing with color, this is your chance to go bold and make the sashing really stand out. A neutral background inside the flying geese gives the perfect balance, allowing those bold pops of color to shine without overwhelming the overall look.

A Playful Take on Scrappy Flying Geese

There are a lot of flying geese quilt patterns out there, but what makes the Tatum Quilt different is its playful, scrappy nature.  The Tatum Quilt is also a great skill-building project, especially for advanced beginners who are comfortable with flying geese. One tip I always give is to take the time to trim your geese—trust me, I know it’s tempting to skip this step, but it makes all the difference in achieving crisp points! You’ll be so much happier with the final result.

Fabric, Color, and Bold Choices

When it comes to fabric selection, the Tatum Quilt is versatile and looks beautiful in both prints and solids. My advice? Have fun with your fabric pull! Choose colors, prints and textures that speak to you, and don’t be afraid to go bold with your sashing. It really adds a grounding effect to the overall design, making the flying geese stand out even more.

One thing to keep in mind is how all your fabrics interact with each other, especially where the geese meet the sashing. Take a moment to lay everything out and see how your choices work together before you start sewing. It’s all part of the creative process, and it can be so rewarding to see your vision come to life!

Let your Creativity Shine!

My hope for you is that you make a Tatum Quilt that you feel proud and accomplished when you finish. The process of working with flying geese and playing with bold colors can really build your confidence as a quilter. You’re not just making a quilt—you’re honing your skills, expressing your creativity, and making something uniquely yours.

The Tatum Quilt takes you on a journey, and part of the fun is that you don’t always know exactly how it’s going to turn out until it’s finished. That’s what I love about quilting in general—it’s an adventure in color, shape, and movement, and the Tatum Quilt embodies all of that.
